History of the Auxiliary in our Division

Remember a pioneer in Auxiliary diversity

by Dave Anderson, BC-AKS

The history of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan traces back to a woman named Leslie Griggs Welles.  She came from a wealthy family in Eveleth, MN and if the name Griggs sounds familiar to Duluthians, it's because the University of Minnesota Duluth's Griggs Hall and Griggs Field are named after her father.

Leslie married George Welles and if that name also sounds familiar to Duluthians, it's because he was part of the Marshall Wells hardware empire that dominated the American market until selling out to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1982.

Mrs. Welles was much more than an idle rich woman, though.  Promoting safety was her passion and she was an early member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.  She chartered most of the flotillas in what is now Division 091-30 and in the early 60's, became one of the first women to move above the flotilla level.

In 1962, there was an Auxiliary flotilla on Lake Vermilion near Tower, MN in which Leslie was active.  That town's newspaper, The Tower News, printed the following article on August 17, 1962.

"Mrs. George Welles is First Woman CG Division Captain"

"A recent issue of "The Beacon" which is the official publication of the Ninth District Coast Guard Auxiliary carried a feature story on Mrs. George Welles of Lake Vermilion and Duluth.  Mrs. Welles was appointed Division Captain in the Ninth Coast Guard District, the first time a woman had been named to that position.

Accepting the bows modestly was the charming newly elected head of Northern Division XXVIII, Leslie Welles.  Mrs. Welles, who helped organize and was a charter member of Flotilla 28-4 at Lake Vermilion has long been an active boating enthusiast.

Mrs. Welles has been an inspector-examiner ever since joining the Auxiliary, has held all of the flotilla offices and moved up this year from division training officer after her election to fill the vacancy left by the death of Division Captain E.E. Laitala last fall."

Mrs. Welles passed away at the age of 90 in 2003.

About Division 30

Division 30, the North Star Division, is the largest geographical division in the Coast Guard Auxiliary District Nine Central. This diverse division with 3 flotillas encompasses the northern half of Minnesota, known as the North Star State.

Duluth-Superior Flotilla 04

04 operates on Lake Superior and along its north shore to Grand Marais, Minnesota. This flotilla encounters all the large seaport issues of the east and west coast but is    located in the middle of America.

Northwest Rivers and Lakes Flotilla 05

05 covers the area from the Red River of the North on the western side, north to Lake of the Woods and the famous Northwest Border Angle on its Canadian side, and the Whitefish Lakes area in the south. This area contains some of the largest lakes in the nation outside of the Great Lakes.

International Falls Flotilla 07

07 includes all the motor permitted lakes outside of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area National Park. Situated along the northern border with Canada, the area offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the nation.
